The challenge in pitching from a bare, tight lie is that bad contact can add strokes to your score quickly. You can skull the ball if the club hits the ground first and bounces into the ball. Or, in an attempt to avoid such a fat strike, you may overcompensate and top the ball by trying to pick it off the hard surface.

Although you may be tempted to hold on for dear life, your best bet to hit a good pitch in this situation is to grip the club very lightly. Don’t try to help the ball into the air. Let the club do the work; maintain a light grip pressure as you swing through impact. Let the weight of the clubhead fall through the ball under its own momentum by keeping your hands and arms soft and loosening your shoulders. Trust your swing and, as always, play in the subconscious.

Pitching from deep grass

If you regularly miss greens with your approach shots, you often find your ball in all types of lies and ground conditions. Long grass is one of the more common challenges you face, so you should be sure to practice hitting the ball from deep, grassy conditions.

When the ball rests down in the grass (see Figure 5-5), the lie requires a steeper swing (see Figure 5-6) than you use for a normal pitch, so take out one of your lofted clubs, such as the lob wedge, sand wedge, or pitching wedge.
